Love in the Title is simultaneously set in 1932, 1964, and 1999, connecting the lives of two sexually-liberated but unhappy women and one prude of Miss Brody proportions, following them on a journey of reconciliation and renewal. The intertwined stories of Irish writer Katie in1999, her uptight mother Trina in1964, and her long-dead wild and adventurous grandmother in1932 take place in three politically and culturally distinct periods in 20th century Ireland. Uncompromising, bittersweet and funny, Love in the Title is a summary of a century of change-from the clash between traditional and modern Ireland, to the widening chasm between the rural and urban Irish experience. Ranging from the hellish experiences of the Catholic orphanage system in the early 1900's, through the gentrification and paralysis of the new middle class in the 1960's, to the conflicted existence of a modern Irish career woman, Love in the Title celebrates the indomitable and enduring spirit of the Irish woman.
