Funding for this $400 million plus park was aided by a $15 million gift from the Pritzker Foundation. Among the attractions is a new amphitheater - a $50 million bandshell rises 100 feet above the Great Lawn. Scientifically designed panels will reflect sound so Grant Park Symphony members will be able to hear each others' instruments.
The park has opened at last, on Friday, July 16, 2004!
The biggest draw is Cloudgate, a bean-shaped sculpture which rises 30 feet above the crowds below. Made of quarter-inch steel, it was manufactured in California and assembled here in Chicago. Scaffolding will be set up soon to aid in the final weld and polish operations.
On our vist we found at least three venues offering snacks and beverages (including beer). - ace99, 08/15/2004
