My husband and I frequent Steven's Restaurant in Downer's Grove quite often with friends and family. We have always enjoyed the food and I really appreciate all the support for America the restaurant has and we were very happy that the restaurant was going smoke free! However, after our last visit, we no longer feel comfortable going to the restaurant. While waiting for a seat, we saw an elderly gentleman help himself to the free after dinner mints on the hostess counter...however, he put the spoon from the bowl directly into his mouth! When he brought the spoon out, there was a string of spit hanging from the spoon and he proceeded to put the spoon back in the bowl (scooping it under the mints). We informed our waitress, who then told the hostess. The hostess proceeded to look over at us and give US a dirty look (she has never been very friendly anyway)and then threw the spoon in a sink and replaced it later (i'm not sure if she washed it or just put the same one back in dirty). However, she did not feel the need to throw out the other mints which had been covered with spit. We feel if the restaurant feels that this is not a health concern, they also must feel that dropping your food and putting it back on your plate, or giving you a dirty dish is probably not a concern either. We can no longer feel like this is a clean restaurant and do not plan to return. Since so many people feel that it is ok to take the mints out of the bowl if there is a spoon, we have told many people about the story and Steven's should realize that that is how customers are lost, because everyone we have told no longer feels that the restaurant is clean. - anonymous, 08/27/2002
