My Wife and I have wanted to have dinner at Marx for over a year. For Christmas 2006, I put a Marx gift certificate in my Wife's stocking. Throughout 2007, we tried no fewer than six times to have dinner at Marx. Each time we were rudely refused the opportunity to make a reservation. When visiting Marx, we were told that the wait would be over two hours. Once we were even told the wait would be over three hours. In each case we left and had dinner elsewhere. I've heard from many locals that they avoid Marx because they refuse to take reservations and the service is slow and arrogant. Marx may have good food (I'll never know), but they have an attitude and customer service problem. After becoming frustrated with Marx, I called to request that my gift certificate be refunded. Again, I was treated with little respect. The woman I talked to told me that Marx would under no circumstances refund my gift certificate. She suggested that because I liked to have dinner out with my Wife on Friday or Saturday evenings (who doesn’t?), that our schedule was not compatible with the restaurant. She recommended having dinner at 3:00 or 4:00 in the afternoon. The fact that Marx stubbornly refuses to take reservations should keep anyone living more than 10 minutes from Stillwater away. Your time is valuable. Have dinner someplace that values your time. Like the others who have posted comments about Marx on this site, I give it two thumbs down. - TMiller, 12/08/2007

Marx's was absolutely incredible! Everything from the atmosphere to the delicious food made my experiences there phenomenal! I went twice with a date, and we were able to get in immediately because of the time of day and day of the week. Enjoying and evening at Marx's would also be a fun way to create a memory with a group of friends. - Sarah, 08/14/2003

This restaurant has great food, great wine, great atmosphere, and even better prices! For the same food, most restaurants would charge at least a few dollars more per dish, so this is a 'best buy'. The appetizer with duck confit is highly recommended, it is outstanding ($4.50), and the filet mignon was an excellent cut and was perfectly prepared as requested, accompanied by garlic mashed potatoes and vegetables ($17.95). They even offer a wine made of organically grown grapes, for all you environmentalists out there (and it's good!). - Nicolette, 08/05/2003

It is hard to review the food at Marx's when the restaurant calls 2 days before you were going to eat there (for Prom) and they cancel your reservation! That is just lousy service. Another restaurant in Stillwater, The Dock Cafe that never takes reservations on the weekend, felt bad for the kids left with no place to eat so, they said that they would give them a reservation at 6:00 by the window so they would have a view of the St. Croix River...now that is great service!!!
