This grand structure is named for its builder and original owner, Wilbur Foshay, and modeled after the Washington monument in tribute to George Washington. Constructed from 1927 - 1929, it was the first building built entirely by union labor. It is 447 feet, 3 inches in height and was the tallest Minneapolis building until 1971. It extends 60 feet underground with 4 basements. Faced with Indiana Bedford Limestone, it contains 750 window bays, and its construction shape and method were patented. The Tower Observation Deck is located on the 31st floor where visitors can see 30 miles on a clear day; it is one of only a handful of open-air observation decks in the country.
